Two Candidate Forums Tonight
Plainfield residents will have to make a choice tonight about which of two candidate forums to attend.
The traditional non-partisan League of Women Voters (LWV) Forum will be held at the Plainfield Public Library, Park Avenue and Eighth Street, downstairs in the Anne Louise Davis room beginning at 7:00p.m.
Across town a new, apparently Democratic, group called "Women Across the City" has also announced a candidate forum to be held at Washington Community School, 427 Darrow Avenue, also beginning at 7:00p.m.
The LWV had previously sent invitations to all municipal candidates, including Mayor Albert T. McWilliams who is running a write-in campaign, and all candidates submitted statements that were published by the LVW.
Last week the second forum was announced inviting all "candidates on the ballot."
In The Plaintalker's previous coverage, Assemblyman Jerry Green objected to the LVW forum including a write-in candidate. But according to Arlene Cossum, Voter Service Chairperson for LVW, Green had reached out to her in mid-October and he had been informed that write-in candidates could be included under state guidelines.
Even after being given an explanation, Green voiced the opinion that the LWV forum was "tailored" to McWilliams.
Cossum said that "the legitimacy of these candidates is recognized as the law of the land because, indeed, when their names are written in on the ballot for the election, those votes are counted and recognized as legitimate and of equal value to the votes cast for candidates whose names do appear on the ballot."
The Plainfield chapter of the LWV formed in 1920 and has been holding candidate forums without protest for several decades.
