Plainfield, Heed Wise Elders
Plainfield used to have a number of citizen watchdogs who frequently commented on public affairs and the actions of elected officials. Former Councilman Bob Ferraro treasured the title and insisted it be added to his name in any article. Kay Cotignola and Helen Miller( both now deceased), Emily Washington, Helga and Murray Roberts and several others frequently commented at City Council meetings. Robert Wilson, Flor Gonzalez and Nancy Piwowar are among those who still often observe the meetings and make comments, but the breadth of the populace who take the time to come out and speak has diminished in recent years.
That's why it was a distinct pleasure to see Dr. Harold Yood in the council audience recently. For many years, Dr. Yood offered his sagacious estimations of life in the Queen City, until family obligations kept him closer to home. He still writes letters to the editor that are published in the Courier News.
While some citizen watchdogs and gadflies have axes to grind or simply enjoy being in the spotlight, Dr. Yood speaks from a viewpoint informed by rich life experience and a deep concern for Plainfield, as far as Plaintalker can tell.
Back before ages 18 to 34 became the favored demographic, the opinions of elders were held in high regard in most civilizations. Among nations that go back more than a couple of hundred years, sages are venerated for their insight.
We hope Dr. Yood will continue to share his perspectives on city matters and that those in charge of decisions affecting Plainfield's future will listen. The current administration is more than halfway through its allotted four years and still has yet to master tasks such as coming up with an adequate web page or making major city streets passable. Dr. Yood is not just exercising his right to free speech, he is giving some good advice based on the long view of life in the Queen City. It's worthy of attention.

We too are glad to see Dr. Yood back at the council meetings. He has been tending to family obligations and deserves a few nights out. There is no one with more passion about Plainfield than the Dr. He would have been a great council member.
