Night Out in Plainfield - a 'going-away party for crime'

Balloons, popcorn, hot dogs and music turned City Hall Plaza into a festive "going-away party for crime" Tuesday (Aug. 2, 2005) as residents and officials joined to mark National Night Out.

The city resumed the event after a two-year hiatus and City Council President Linda Carter extended it to a week. She encouraged residents to gather outside and meet their neighbors at cook-outs and block parties.

On Tuesday, Carter led a flashlight march from City Hall. Marchers wore National Night Out t-shirts and carried signs calling for peace in the neighborhoods.

Casually-clad officials mingled with residents and uniformed police and fire staff. Public Works Superintendent John Louise and Councilman Don Davis cooked hot dogs for the crowd, which included Senior Center members, Housing Authority residents and families from across the city.

One very pleased attendee was former 1st Ward Councilwoman Elizabeth Urquhart, who led the National Night Out effort for 14 of her 16 years in office. Urquhart worked with Carter to bring National Night Out back to the city, where crime overall is down but 11 homicides have occurred so far this year.
