Water Main Repairs Affect Roads, Streetscape

An elderly woman with a saint's image pinned to her dress found this scene at her regular bus stop on Watchung Avenue. Plaintalker encountered her later at a stop a few blocks south where she was able to board her bus.

Pressed-brick sections of the sidewalk were being removed to gain access to water lines for cleaning and repair. According to information passed out at a recent community forum, the work began last month and will continue through November.

Near Investors Savings Bank, a section of brick has been cut out in preparation for digging.

Temporary water pipes in the work area have developed leaks that spritz passing vehicles and crumble the asphalt.

Hoses snake along a wall to provide temporary water connections.

Water gushes out of a hose on East Seventh Street. The hoses and ramps at corners make for tricky crossings, something returning students will encounter tomorrow as school opens.
The project is necessary to remove deposits from water mains, according to New Jersey American Water. Mains will be re-lined and disinfected before normal water service is restored. The contractor is J. Fletcher Creamer. Anyone with a problem can contact the Customer Service Center at 1-800-272-1325.

I know, this was not a surprise and they had time to set up detour, no parking instead of just having the cops sit in their cars !! No wonder nothing gets done with new development.

When I bought my house in 1987 I had to install 2 water filters every 2 months to remove the debris that I was paying the water company for. After having the mains cleared as they are doing down town my filters last a year. My take on this is live with a little confusion now so you can live with better water after the work is done.
