More on Reorg

Two things were missing from Plaintalker's report: Councilman William Reid was not able to attend the annual reorganization but was sworn in on New Year's Eve. Also, Councilwoman Linda Carter was named chairman of the whole for the second year and had to do hardship duty trying to keep the record straight as the council chased itself around the mulberry bush with resolutions that were tabled, amended, reconsidered and eventually passed.

If in fact the meeting - more than four hours' worth - turns up on Channel 74, viewers can see for themselves the nuances that left this writer tired out. There was the mayor's dredging up of stuff from the 2005 campaign, the subtle power plays among council personalities, the perceived incompatibility of the legislative and executive branches and some ham-handed zingers that demeaned the occasion.

Meanwhile, Council President Rashid Burney has posted his goals for 2009 on his blog and Councilman Adrian Mapp has put the full text of his remarks on his blog. It will be easier than ever to hold officials accountable when they lay out their aims so definitively.

Despite the disturbing aspects of the meeting, Plaintalker felt it important to bear witness to this signal event and will attempt to do so throughout 2009, if the fates allow.

I thought I explained them above, but maybe I will do a longer post on what was disconcerting about the reorg.
