World AIDS Day

Today is the 20th anniversary of World AIDS Day.

Twelve of the state's 21 counties have no public events listed on a state calendar. Union County has two events listed in Elizabeth. A while back, there was high awareness of World AIDS Day in Plainfield, with vigils for those lost, viewings of the AIDS Quilt, prayer services and other acknowledgements of the impact of HIV/AIDS on the community. Dec. 1 was an occasion to inform and educate city residents on prevention, testing and services for those affected by HIV/AIDS.

Click here for state links on HIV/AIDS.

Despite the apparent waning awareness, individuals and families are still strongly affected. According to state figures, in 2004 AIDS was the third leading cause of death among African American males and the fifth leading cause among African American females. The disease affects 1 in 63 African Americans, in contrast to 1 in 728 whites.

Take a look at the links above. If you know someone who died of AIDS, give them a thought today. Plainfield lost many a talented and special person to the disease, sometimes several a month before new treatments were developed.

Your remembrances or comments are welcome.

Hi, Bernice,

I was in NYC yesterday and attended the World AIDS Day remembrance at City Hall. It remains devastating to hear all those names.
