LWV Forum Tonight

Since becoming president of the League of Women Voters of Plainfield, Herb Green has brought about a 71 percent increase in membership and has launched a series of forums for the public.

Herb and his wife Marjorie wrote letters to people they know in the community, urging them to consider joining the League. Herb also asked existing members to do the same. The result is more people to help do the League's work and a general revitalization of its purpose.

Tonight the first forum will take place. Below is a press release I sent to the print media. (I do publicity for the League.)

I'm told it's Herb's birthday, so if you get a chance, shake his hand and congratulate him on both his birthday and a great job as president of the League.

PLAINFIELD – Former state legislator and education official Gordon A. MacInnes and Plainfield Schools Superintendent Steve Gallon III will speak on education issues at a forum presented by the League of Women Voters of Plainfield.

The topic is “Using School Funding to Narrow the Achievement Gap between Our Children and Those Who Attend Schools in Affluent Districts.” The League invites all to attend and participate in the Dec. 3 forum from 7 to 9 p.m. at Emerson Community School, 305 Emerson Ave., Plainfield.

MacInnes is a former state senator and assemblyman, as well as a former assistant state education commissioner. He is presently a lecturer at the Woodrow Wilson School of Princeton University.

Gallon was named superintendent in February after a nationwide search. Formerly a teacher, principal and administrator in the Miami-Dade school district, he took office as chief school administrator in Plainfield on July 1.

“If you are a parent of a school-age child, if you are a staff member of our school system, if you are a taxpayer, or, most important, if you are a resident of Plainfield who believes that providing our children with a high-quality education is a sacred responsibility, this program is for you,” said League president Herb Green.

The forum is the first of three planned by the League for 2008-09. For more information, call (908) 757-1873.
